Receding gums is a condition where your gums have pulled away from your teeth and you can see the root surface of your tooth. If left untreated or neglected, this can result in tooth loss. Some people are more prone to receding gums than others. Gums are classified as delicate/thin or thick gums. Thinner types are at more risk of receding.
There are a number of causes of receding gums. The most common reason is due to hard tooth brushing. Using a medium or hard toothbrush and applying too much pressure, will damage your gums and over time will cause your gums to recede.

If you have recession, then there is exposed root surface. The root surface is not protected by enamel, which is the outer white layer of your tooth and most resistant against decay. This lack of protection, will allow decay to occur quicker and reach the nerve of your tooth faster. Occasionally, we will cover these root surfaces with a tooth coloured filling.
