Gum disease (also known as Bleeding/Swollen Gums, Gingivitis or Periodontitis etc) is a general term describing swollen and infected gums, bone and tissues surrounding the teeth. Gum disease can be mild or severe. Initially, there is no pain associated with gum disease and you may be unaware that you have it. Usually, once you get pain, there is far too much damage and loss of teeth can be unavoidable.
Early signs of gum disease are:
Presence of bacteria on your teeth, due to poor brushing techniques, is the main cause of gum disease. Bacteria colonize on your teeth in the form of plaque. The longer the plaque stays on your teeth, the worse the condition will get. Other causes of gum disease are genetics or a family history of gum disease, smoking and immunological diseases such as diabetes, HIV/AIDS and cancer.
Our highly experienced team is equipped with diagnosing and managing this disease. If you present with any of these early signs, you must have your gums assessed. Treatment requires a thorough clean to remove all the plaque and tartar from your teeth. We may also prescribe you with antiseptic agents and antibiotics. We will also review your brushing and flossing techniques, to give your gums the maximum potential for healing.
Gum disease is treatable if diagnosed early and in time. If not treated early, you are likely to lose your teeth.
